Is, Was and Will Be – The Unknown Character of Christ and His Word

Can A Christian Watch TV?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hi S____,
There is certainly nothing wrong with watching certain documentaries, educational and nature programs.
I have no problem in saying that most of what is on T. V. is not fit to be seen in public. Even many of the commercials put before the eyes of God’s children are unfit to be seen in public. I am well aware of what a ‘stick in the mud’ that makes me, but it is without a doubt the Truth.
Having said that, I do not get into specific programs, telling people what they can or cannot watch on television. A babe in Christ is simply incapable of acting as a mature child of God. But if maturity is your goal then here are some scriptures which should give you the direction you need. Pray and ask God to give you wisdom and understanding as you read His Word. He will not let you down. As one grow spiritually, one’s interests will indeed change to match the spiritual growth.  Fleshly interests will fade.

1Co 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

We certainly need to be in control of our T. V. viewing and every other aspect of our lives:

1Co 6:12  All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Of course, we must always consider how our T. V. viewing habits will affect those around us.

1Co 10:23  All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
1  Co 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s [ wealth]
1Co 16:14   Let all your things be done with charity.
Php 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ:…

The word translated here ‘let your conversation’ is also translated ‘live’.  This verse could also read “Only live as it becometh the gospel of Christ.”
I hope this gives you some direction as you decide how you use your time in the service of God and your fellow man.
Mike
