Is, Was and Will Be – The Unknown Character of Christ and His Word

Genealogies

Hi J____,
Thank you for your question.
You ask about the significance of genealogies in scripture?
The genealogies given in scripture are simply documentation and foundations of the seed of the woman and of the seed of the serpent. What is important to remember is that when Christ came, all of those physical matters became but spiritual types and shadows of spiritual realities in Christ:

Gal 4:28  Now we, brethren [ Gentile Galatians], as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Gal 4:29  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [ that was born] after the Spirit, even so [ it is] now.

Gal 3:29  And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

In Christ, it has all been taken out of the temporal realm and placed into the spiritual realm:

Gal 4:30  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
Gal 4:31  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

But we need the genealogies of Ishmael and of Esau and of Isaac and Jacob, as types and shadows of the spiritual realities of those who are in Christ and those who are not in Christ.
This principle goes all the way back to the garden of Eden:

Gen 3:14  And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [ art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Gen 3:15  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

That final bruise will be in the lake of fire which is the second death.
I hope this is of some help.
Mike
