We Are Strangers and Pilgrims On Earth
Mike,
God used one of your papers to help me see past the “all will be saved” part, and see HOW all will be saved, by what means, and what salvation really is. I mean, when the man in the video I sent you talks about “salvation” what does he think that is? He rightly doesn’t believe in hell, obviously. But, I mean, a prostitute is certainly not saved from being a prostitute, if she isn’t led into good works. I think the term “salvation” is so nebulous that people just throw it out there without giving it much thought.
Anyway, it was the revelation about the Greek “paideuo” and how God’s unmerited favor actually chastises us into conformity to His Son’s image, that blew my mind, and opened up the meaning of the Lord’s physical death and resurrection and how it applies to salvation through baptism into death, and that through faith.
I actually had a similar path, in that I heard some of those “righteous while sinning” doctrines, and I got snagged there for a while. It didn’t seem FULL. You know what I mean? I went from a Charasmatic rock n’ roll, MTV church, which was (unbeknownst to them) FILLED with Mosaic Law, fear of curses, tithe- or- else etc, to “sin is ok” doctrines. What a minefield. (But I am still on guard, not to say I stand, lest I fall.)
When I saw what Paul meant by justification, and that whoever is dead to sin is justified/ freed, THEN I really began to see the fullness, the balance, the justice, the forgiveness, and understand why it is all such a process.
I think some level of “frustration” is ok, in that Paul said he burned when he saw people led away (2Co 11:29), but that burning should be from the right perspective: care for others. And that is still something I am sorting out, separating my feelings of rejection from people (from my old church), from my feelings of urgent concern for the truth on their behalf. Remembering God’s will in all this does help.
In the Lord,
S____
Hi S____,
It is very rewarding to know that God used one of my papers to help you to see the function of grace, as well as it’s meaning. Grace means favor, but its function is to chasten those to whom God shows His favor.
Tit 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Tit 2:12 Teaching [ Greek paideuo – chastens] us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
While we are in Babylon we always love the outcome of knowing God, we simply don’t know of, or like the process. That is why the writer of whom you spoke cannot see the process and is blinded by the outcome of the salvation of all. Salvation without judgment is just another way of turning grace into lasciviousness, and to him there is no need for judgment if you are under grace. He neither knows nor believes that “grace chastens.”
Here is his theology as it concerns the function of grace:
Jer 7:9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
Jer 7:10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered [ same Hebrew word translated elsewhere ‘saved’ – 2Sa.19:9] to do all these abominations?
But what does God say of such a doctrine?
Jer 7:8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
As you so rightly observed, S___, we are not saved “in sin” neither are we saved “to sin,” but we are saved from sin, and contrary to the How To Be Saved While Smoking A Cigarette theology, we do through Christ obtain dominion over sin. Like all of us such a teacher will be judged out of his own mouth.
Luk 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
You say:
“I think some level of “frustration” is ok, in that Paul said he burned when he saw people led away (2Co 11:29), but that burning should be from the right
perspective: care for others. And that is still something I am sorting out, separating my feelings of rejection from people (from my old church), from my
feelings of urgent concern for the truth on their behalf. Remembering God’s will in all this does help.”
Here Isa 2 Cor. 11:29:
2Co 11:28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
2Co 11:29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
2Co 11:30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.
I don’t think that I would use the word ‘frustrated’ simply because as you point out, “Remembering God’s will in all this does help.” We both know that whatever happens, happens simply because God is working it so:
Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Whenever we are “frustrated” God is showing us that we are not yet accepting of His way of doing things.
Nevertheless, we are never told to be lackadaisical about sin and injustice. As a matter of fact, there is also this verse of admonition that demonstrates this Truth.
Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
God’s elect should be highly “angry” when they witness evil and injustice, but they are never to sin or “let the sun go down on their wrath.” We are never to allow ourselves to forget that we are not citizens of this earth. “Our citizenship is in heaven.”
Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [ them], and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
… For our citizenship is in heaven; whence also we wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: (ASV)
I appreciate your zeal for the Truth and for the things of the spirit. I pray that God will grant you to continue in His word and doctrine “to the end.”
Mat 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all [ men] for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
Your brother in Christ,
Mike
