Pro 13:1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scornerH3887 heareth not rebuke.
Verse one of proverbs 13 (Pro 13:1) can be thought of as a seed which reads “A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke”. The conditions we need by the grace and faith of Christ to hear and receive that seed that needs to mature within us, is a process that is accomplished by the destruction of the scoffer or as we looked at last week the boastful man of sin [Abomination of desolation] (2Th 2:5-8) who resides within each of our lives, less and less Lord willing as Christ increases and we decrease (Mat 13:18-23 , Joh 3:30 , Rom 3:27). The tare in this first verse is “but a scorner heareth not rebuke” and both must grow together within us until we are mature enough to have that tare extracted from our heavens without causing any damage to the wheat that is represent by the first part that reads “A wise son heareth his father’s instruction“. This principle can be applied to all of the proverbs that have this negative positive relationship within them and reminds us of these words of Christ (Mat 13:27-30).
Mat 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
Mat 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
Mat 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
Mat 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.scornerH3887. lûts

In the following verses (Pro 13:2-25) we will look at the fruit that is given to God’s elect who are a kind first fruits (Jas 1:18) who are the first to trust God and acknowledge (Eph 1:12) that it is only “by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God“(Eph 2:8).
Jas 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
With that grace through faith working in our lives we are able to acknowledge all the negative aspects of the our carnal hearts that God is able to destroy by the brightness of Christ coming into our lives, causing us to move with fear to the saving our souls (Luk 12:5 , Heb 5:7 , Heb 11:7 , Eph 5:30).
Luk 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Pro 13:2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
The fruit of our mouth with the mind of Christ is described in these verses (Gal 5:22-26), and the bad fruit in our mouths is brought forth as a result of our transgressions which are violently done against Christ and described in these verses (Gal 5:19-21 , Mat 25:45).
Good fruit:
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one anotherMat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Violent Fruit:
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.Mat 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
Pro 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Keeping our mouth happens when we are endued with knowledge from God. With that knowledge we are not to just be hearers of it but Lord willing wise man who hear the instruction of our Father and build our house (Php 2:12-13) upon the rock with those words. Of course it is the Lord who is building the house, but we work out our own salvation with fear and trembling as if the building of the house depended on us (Mat 7:24-25 , Psa 127:1)
Php 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Mat 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Mat 7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.Jas 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. [in other words he does not open wide his lips and just says anything with no bridle on his tongue (Psa 39:1), and he keeps his mouth and learns to say only what the Lord would have us say (Pro 26:4-5 , 1Pe 3:15-16 , Mat 10:16-17)]
Pro 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Pro 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1Pe 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.Mat 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Mat 10:17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
We’re not being told in this proverb we should never talk, rather we’re being told that our way of life should be reflecting the understanding that God has given us, that tells us we are unprofitable servants doing that which is expected of us (Luk 17:10 , Php 2:13), even as were always to be ready to give an answer for the hope of glory within us with meekness and fear to those who would ask of us (1Pe 4:17-19).
Luk 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Php 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1Pe 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
1Pe 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
Pro 13:4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
Our desires come from God (Eph 1:11), along with the diligent spirit that we ask for so that those desires can be realized. We have not because we ask not, but also what we desire plays into this proverb as well (Jas 4:2-3).
Jas 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Jas 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
If we are only asking for ourselves then we truly are asking amiss, however if we look well to the body of Christ that God has made us overseers of (Act 20:28) we will look not just to our own needs but to the needs of others Lord willing (Php 2:4). God can burn out the negative fat of the sluggard and cause us to be more diligent and blessed to enjoy the fat of the land meaning the rich life of Christ that we share with one another in love “the soul of the diligent shall be made fat” (Eph 4:16).
Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Php 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Pro 13:5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsomeH887, and cometh to shame.
When we were in Babylon we did things in ignorance (Eph 4:18 , 1Pe 1:14 , Eph 2:1-2 , 1Ti 1:13-14) but then when God showed us our blindness, our wicked past which we are ashamed of (Rom 6:21) became loathsomeH887 to us. There is negative and positive use of smell (2Co 2:16).
2Co 2:16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
