God Hath Set in the Church…
God Hath Set in the Church…
1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
1Co 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
1Co 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
1Co 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
It is sometimes amazing how quickly we reap what we sow. It has been brought to my attention that those who were among us and who cast away the basic principle of seeking spiritual safety, waging spiritual warfare, and establishing doctrine through “a multitude of counselors, have already begun to reap the seeds of the rebellion in which they also participated. There is already another group which has broken away from those who rebelled against the basic principles of 1) seeking safety in a multitude of counselors, 2) trying the spirits to see if they are of God, 3) being persuaded by their leaders, and 4) not rebuking an elder unless that elder has been determined by the counselors to have sinned. None of those principles were observed or obeyed by the camp of Korah who have taken it upon themselves to return to Egypt under the direction of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, and all of their “men of renown” who simply did not approve of those the Lord had chosen to lead His people.
When basic Biblical principles are ignored error and heresies are the inevitable fruit. Here are four principles which have been ignored and disobeyed by heretics:
One:
Pro 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Pro 15:22 Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
Pro 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.Two:
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.Three:
Heb 13:17 Be persuaded by your leaders, and be deferring to them, for they are vigilant for the sake of your souls, as having to render an account, that they may be doing this with joy, and not with groaning, for this is disadvantageous for you.Four:
1Ti 5:1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;1Ti 5:19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
1Ti 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
1Ti 5:21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
We came to see, through our trials of late, that Acts 15 shows us how we are to deal with elders with whom we have differences. The apostles, Paul and Barnabas, were challenged over their doctrine that the Gentiles did not need to be circumcised to be saved from their sins:
Act 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
Act 15:2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
Paul and Barnabas went “unto the apostles and elders about this question”. They did not go to the very people who were accusing the elders of heresy to determine whether the elders being accused were guilty of teaching heresy. Paul and Barnabas sought the input of the other “apostles and elders”. They did not say, we don’t want to know what all the other elders have to say on this subject. Paul and Barnabas did not say, “Let’s ask one elder first and then ask the others” as was attempted in this trial. No, instead they immediately sought “a multitude of counselors”, and they did what their counselors said to do.
None of those principles were followed by the dissidents who instead went straight to the flock and gathered other dissidents to accuse one elder and in so doing they also accused all the elders who saw through their rebellion against these basic principles which the Lord has given us to deal with heresy at every level in our midst. Anyone, whether it is an elder or another part of the body of Christ, who comes to the Word of God and selectively chooses what parts of that word they will obey, has been given, by the Lord Himself, what the Lord calls an idol of that person’s or group of person’s hearts.
This very situation is what Ezekiel 14 is all about:
Eze 14:1 Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
Eze 14:2 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Eze 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
When you come to your elders and demand they must believe what you tell them they must believe before you hear from the rest of the elders who almost double in number those who are dictating doctrine without seeking the counsel of all of our elders, it is you who the Lord has given an “idol of the heart”, and it is you and all who seek unto you who will be cut off from the Israel of God. Thus saith the Lord Himself:
Eze 14:4 Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
Eze 14:5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.
Eze 14:6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
Eze 14:7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
Eze 14:8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Eze 14:9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
Eze 14:10 And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;
If safety is in a multitude of counselors, and if we ignore those counselors to maintain an idol of our heart, “I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;”
What will be that punishment? The Lord answers us all “according to the multitude of [our] idols”. What does that mean? Here is what that means:
Psa 18:25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;
Psa 18:26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
Psa 18:27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.
We have an Old Testament example of how the Lord will do this in the story of how Joseph dealt with his carnal-minded brothers who were certainly froward toward him. So when his brothers were made to come and bow down before him, as the Lord told Joseph they would, how did Joseph present himself to them? Did Joseph give them a pass without first dragging them to repentance? No, of course not. That is not how God has dealt with any of us either. When we were froward, He presented Himself froward to us, just as did Joseph to his brothers:
Gen 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Gen 42:6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
Gen 42:7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
Gen 42:8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
Gen 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
It would have been completely unjust for Joseph to have forgiven his brothers without first bringing them to a deep, heartfelt repentance for the sins they had committed against him. Here are Christ’s own words concerning the necessity of repentance preceding forgiveness:
Luk 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
The sum of God’s Word is Truth, and the fact that we are told that our Lord will show Himself froward to the froward, demonstrates that He requires deep heartfelt repentance before He will forgive us of our sins.
God gives out no get-out-of-jail-free passes, and He never, ever fails to be a just God. These are the words of scripture we must remember if we want to know His mind about how He is dealing with sin in our lives:
Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Here are two verses bearing out this very basic principle of the mind of the Lord:
Deu 32:35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
Psa 94:1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
Eze 25:14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord GOD.
Nah 1:2 God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
We are not yet in a position to “lay [the Lord’s] vengeance upon Edom”, but when that day does come, He will do so “by the hand of [His] people Israel”. Until that time this is our instruction from the Lord:
Mat 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
Jas 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
As always, the way of life is a very narrow way. A child of God will never seek to avenge himself, and it behooves all of us to show mercy in judgment. But mercy and justice are not at odds, and this is also the mind of God concerning His justice and judgment:
Rom 3:5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
2Th1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
Jud 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
“I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, the Lord shall judge His people”. That verse tells us the Lord’s judgments are His recompense and His vengeance.
The vengeance and wrath of God is common to all men. His elect are first to experience that wrath, vengeance and judgment, while we are in “our mortal bodies”. Because we are the first to experience all these things while “in our mortal flesh” we will “come forth unto life” (Joh 5:27-29).
2Co 4:11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
“The rest of the dead” experience the death of their carnal mind, the wrath of God, vengeance and judgment in spiritual bodies. That is why their death to their carnal mind is called “the second death”, and that is why they are destined to “come forth unto judgment”.
Joh 5:27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Joh 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
Joh 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation [Greek: judgment].1Co 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
All the masses of mankind from Adam to the great white throne judgment, except for the few chosen to have part in the first resurrection, will be judged in “a spiritual body”, in that vast second group of mankind. The Biblical symbol of this judgment is called “the lake of fire” which we are told is also called “the second death”, because this is the second group who have not yet died to their own carnal minds. For that reason they are raised up unto judgment while not in bodies of “mortal flesh”. All who are not in the first resurrection must be judged in “a spiritual body” in “the second death”:
Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life [first resurrection] was cast into the lake of fire.
“We which live [and] are… delivered to death for Jesus’ sake… in our mortal flesh… are the body of Christ [and] His body… is the church”:
Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:
Going back to 1 Corinthians 12 we are made to know that Christ’s body is “one body”, but that ‘one body’ has many members, each member needing to do its part to make His body complete and functional. The holy spirit goes to great lengths to emphasize that the body of Christ, like our own physical bodies, works together without friction or schism, being directed by the Head of His body, which ‘Head’ we are told in the previous chapter, is Christ:
1Co 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Now let’s look at how He wants us to think and to act as the part He has given us to perform in His body the church:
1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
In the body of Christ there are different gifts, different administrations, and different operations, but it is all being done by the same God which works everything in everyone. As Job tells us Christ is not schizophrenic:
Job 23:13 But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.
It is Christ and His Father who are “of one mind”, and that ‘one mind’ directs all the various parts of His “one body” because Christ is the head of every man:
1Co 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Notice who the scriptures clearly state is running the operations of the body which is His church:
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
There is but one body, and that ‘one body’ is comprised of many members:
1Co 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is [the] Christ.
1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.
1Co 12:15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
1Co 12:16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
If these words are true, we simply cannot say, “I have no elders, Jesus is my elder.” After all who is ‘Jesus’? This is who ‘Jesus’ is:
Act 22:8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
“I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting” is just another way of saying, “The body is not one member but many.” This is who Jesus of Nazareth is at this very moment:
1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Where we are in the body of Christ is where “God has set [us]”. We do not just decide to become an apostle, a prophet or a teacher. Any person who is given any of those callings is manifested to be so gifted before the whole body, and his placement should surprise no one because he has been demonstrating the fruits of his calling for months and years in advance of having the hands of the other teachers and elders placed upon him.
The point being made is that none of us can scripturally unilaterally give himself a position within the church which is His body, and neither will any true man of God ever tell you that he has no need of teachers and elders or leaders.
Paul continues with that theme:
1Co 12:17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
1Co 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
1Co 12:19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?
1Co 12:20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.
1Co 12:21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
1Co 12:22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
1Co 12:23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
1Co 12:24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
The various functions in “the church… which is His body” are set there by God Himself. Not one part of His body can say “I have no need of you” to any other part of His body. Those who do will be judged out of their own mouths as contradicting and rejecting these Words of Christ Himself… “The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you”.
But how does Christ communicate who it is that “[He] sets… in the church”? Does the Lord ever speak to the hearts of individual words which contradict “that which is written”? Here is the Biblical answer to how the Lord communicates with mankind at this time:
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
It is through the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, and “every joint” of His body that the Lord is perfecting the saints and doing the work of the ministry and edifying the body of Christ. And it is through these same functions His body is “fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies…”
The Greek word translated “compacted” in Eph 4:16 is:
G4822
συμβιβάζω
sumbibazō
soom-bib-ad’-zo
From G4862 and βιβάζω bibazō (to force; causatively [by reduplication] of the base of G939); to drive together, that is, unite (in association or affection), (mentally) to infer, show, teach: – compact, assuredly, gather, instruct, knit together, prove.
Here is where it appears in the New Testament:
G4822

Col 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Col 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together [G4822: sumbibazo], increaseth with the increase of God.Act 9:22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving [G4822: sumbibadzo] that this is very Christ.
Act 16:10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering [G4822: sumbibazo] that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct [G4822: sumbibazo] him? But we have the mind of Christ.
1Co 12:25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
1Co 12:26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
The answer to all these questions is an emphatic, ”No, all are not prophets, teachers, workers of miracles, gifted with healing, gifted to speak other languages, nor to interpret other languages!” The point being, the church needs many gifts and functions to “build itself up in love”.
Christ prayed for each of us and not just for His apostles of the generation in which He was born:
Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Joh 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Conclusion
The point of it all is that we all need each other, and we need every function Christ has placed in the church, including elders, prophets and teachers, with this goal in mind:
1Co 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
1Pe 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1Pe 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
1Pe 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
1Pe 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
1Pe 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1Pe 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1Pe 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
1Pe 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.Heb 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Heb 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; [Eph 5:30]Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Joh 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
