Has Christ Always Existed?
Was Jesus Christ created, or did He have no beginning?
Thanks,

Hi R____,
Thank you for your question. You ask if Jesus Christ was created, or did He have no beginning?
Twelve times in the book of Revelation alone, and four times in the first chapter of that book we are told that Christ is “the beginning, and He is the end.” This, of course, is speaking of His relation to His creation, with which creation He was commissioned by His Father.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
This is so simply because it pleased the Father that Christ be His channel of creation:
Col 1:16 For by him [ Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisibl e, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
But we are told that Christ “emptied Himself ” of His divine nature for the purpose of coming in “the same flesh and blood” we have, and being crucified and dying for the sins of the entire world of all time, each to be saved in God’s own predestined order.
Php 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
Php 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Php 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond- servant, and being made in the likeness of men. (NASB)
1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
1Co 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
1Co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Ti 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [ the sins of] the whole world.
While those verses do not give us an answer to your question, they do demonstrate that Christ existed before He came in the flesh. But did he have a beginning or has He always existed? What is His relationship to His Father? Here is the truth of what the Bible teaches concerning Christ’s relationship to His Father. Here is the answer to your question.
1Co 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and [ that is, besides this “one God, the Father, of whom are all things,” there is also] one Lord Jesus Christ, [ created by the Father as His channel for His creation and therefore] by whom are all things, and we by him.
The words I have bracketed in are well established by many other verses of God’s Word, like this one:
Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Simply put, if Christ had no beginning, He would be incapable of dying for our sins, and He would have “emptied Himself of nothing.” But Christ did die, and without a resurrection His body would have corrupted and would have perished.
1Co 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1Co 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1Co 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
The scriptures quoted above prove that Christ came out from the Father even before Christ was used to create the physical universe. We are told that Christ was before everything else that we see but we are never told that He has eternally existed. Instead we see Him calling Himself “the beginning of the creation of God.” So it should be obvious that any being capable of “emptying Himself ” of His divinity, is not the Creator of our Creator. It should be obvious that if Christ is “of God” then God was before Christ. We are not told how long Christ was with God before His Father commissioned Him to create all things, but we do know that “All things are of God and all things are by Christ. We cannot “think above what is written.”
1Co 4:6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and [ to] Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think [ of men] above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. [ The words ‘of men’ are not in the Greek].
I have covered every angle of this subject in previous letters, twenty six of which are listed below. Read Is God a Trinity? first, and then look at any of the other letters which might interest you.
I hope you understand that it is simply impossible to rehash things I have already covered in previous letters.
Thank you for understanding my situation. If you still have a question for which you cannot find the answer in these letters, then feel free to write again.
