How We Glorify God

How We Glorify God

I want my life to glorify the Lord, more than this life itself. Is that not what we all want? So how do we go about living a life that glorifies God?

Rom 15:7  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

1Co 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

2Co 4:15  For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

Look at these instructions and tremble at them. We are commanded to “receive one another… to the glory of God”. The reason we are told to “receive one another” is that we do not just naturally ‘receive one another’. I was just told by a brother on the phone, “I have been very slow to get involved with this group because I do not want to become part of another cult.

But this same brother admitted that he has never once been solicited for money, and he told me that this is the first group of believers he has ever known who established every word with scripture. So certainly we want to be very careful to “try the spirits (1Jo 4:1), but after having done so “receive ye one another… to the glory of God.”

We are commanded “Whether [we] eat or drink, or whatsoever [we] do, do all to the glory of God”. Again, we are told to do that because we just naturally do not do everything we do to the glory of God. When we seek to acknowledge God and His words in everything we do, we are promised His direction in our lives:

Pro 3:6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

2Co 4:15 tells us “that the abundant grace… through the thanksgiving of many [will] redound to the glory of God”. So a spirit of gratitude coupled with God’s own chastening grace are instrumental in redounding to the glory of God.

What the above verse reveals to us is that if ever we are granted to receive each other and to do all we do to His glory, it will be Christ the Lord Himself whose grace will chasten us to forsake ungodliness and worldly lust and through a grateful spirit, which must also be given to us, will make you and me to glorify God:

Isa 60:21  Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

These verses in 1 Corinthians 1 reveal the purpose and the reason why it is so important that God’s glory must be “the work of [His own] hands:

1Co 1:26  For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
1Co 1:27  But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
1Co 1:28  And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
1Co 1:29  That no flesh should glory in his presence.
1Co 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
1Co 1:31  That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

James is on the same page with Paul:

Jas 2:5  Listen, my beloved brothers, did not God choose the poor of the world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he promised to those who love him?

So what exactly is “the work of… the Lord’s hands”, by which “[He] may be glorified”? (Isa 60:21)

Let’s just let the Lord talk to us about that very subject in a chapter of scripture where we are four times told “Oh that men would praise the LORD [glorify Him] for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” That chapter which gives us so much of the details of what is involved in you and me living lives which will glorify God, of course:

Psa 107:1  O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever…[“through the thankgiving of many… redound to the glory of God”, 2Co 4:15]
Psa 107:2  Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
Psa 107:3  And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
Psa 107:4  They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
Psa 107:5  Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
Psa 107:6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:7  And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
Psa 107:8  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Psa 107:9  For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
Psa 107:10  Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
Psa 107:11  Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
Psa 107:12  Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
Psa 107:13  Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:14  He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
Psa 107:15  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Psa 107:16  For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
Psa 107:17  Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
Psa 107:18  Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
Psa 107:19  Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:20  He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Psa 107:21  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Psa 107:22  And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
Psa 107:23  They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
Psa 107:24  These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
Psa 107:25  For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
Psa 107:26  They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
Psa 107:27  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.
Psa 107:28  Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
Psa 107:29  He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
Psa 107:30  Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
Psa 107:31  Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Psa 107:32  Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
Psa 107:33  He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
Psa 107:34  A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
Psa 107:35  He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
Psa 107:36  And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
Psa 107:37  And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
Psa 107:38  He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

Rom 9:17  For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
Rom 9:18  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

The Lord shows His mercy towards our new man, and He destroys the kingdom of Pharaoh, who typifies our old man. Christ has said that it is only after we have glorified Him that we will know Him.

We just naturally fear death. We just naturally fear the death of our old man’s kingdom, and we don’t even know it is so, but this is what we are told:

Joh 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
