Is It Scripturally Permissible To Watch Oprah?

Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Your commitment and service to your bible site makes for a great testimony, something which sadly lacks with so many “Christian” leaders today.

I have something else on which I would like your opinion. There’s no rush to answer so please don’t leave other more important issues hanging to answer this one.

It concerns Oprah Winfrey. The scriptures you quoted is what I’m at;

2Jn 1:9  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10  If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2Jn 1:11  For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

I know various Christian ladies that make Oprah viewing time like an idol in their lives. I don’t take issue with them and don’t intend to as this is purely for my interest. Am I wrong in saying that they are placing this anti-Christian woman on a pedestal and letting her and her doctrines into their homes, apart from the fact that they are by their very support giving her credibility. I’m not saying that every program of hers is amiss, but surely with the status that she has attained a committed follower of Christ should make a stand.

I look forward to your comments, anti or pro and pray that God bless you in all you do.

Hi S____,

Thank you for your question concerning watching Oprah. Of course it is no big sin to watch an Oprah show where she is having a guest who may be speaking of a particular subject which may be of interest.

Having said that I am very quick to say that Oprah herself is not one to be admired by any woman. She may be financially successful and a very popular person, but she is certainly not a Christian, and should not be afforded the time of any of God’s saints. Oprah is very outspoken with her ‘New Age’ philosophy and religion.

I have personally heard her testimony of how she came to see that Christianity was not for her. She said that she was attending a mega church in Chicago and heard the minister read the scripture telling us that ‘our God is a jealous God’, and she knew from that point on that Christianity was not for her. I have seen her argue with her audiences that Christ cannot possibly be the only way to God because there are billions of people who believe in other ways to get to God.

Oprah’s philosophy places the individual at the center of the universe instead of God. Oprah worships and serves the creature, in other words herself, rather than the Creator.

Rom 1:25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

By worshipping and serving ourselves, which we all do by nature, we are worshipping and serving the beast, which we all are by nature.

Ecc 3:18  I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

So you and I are on the same page concerning the amount of time that should be afforded the Oprah Winfrey show.

2Co 5:20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

What we must be on our guard against is giving the adversary any means at all of coming between our Creator and us.

I hope all of this is of some help.

Your brother in Christ,

Mike
