Is, Was and Will Be – The Unknown Character of Christ and His Word

Scripture As Both Positive And Negative

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hello B____,
You seem to have a good grasp on the negative application of the “sun, moon, and stars” in the scriptures you’ve provided. Many if not all of the symbols in scripture have a negative and a positive application. As we look at a few of these let’s also remember that all is of God, even the negative.

2Co 5:18 And all things are of God…
Rom 11:36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things.

Consider the lion. We know that Jesus Christ is the Lion.

Rev 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

As He is so are we in this world, so God’s elect are also likened to a lion.

Rev 4:7 The first living creature was like a lion the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.
Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Now let’s look at the negative application of lion. Satan is a lion.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
1Ki 13:26 Now when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to the word of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke to him.”

Let’s look at another quick example – the serpent. Now we know that the serpent has a negative application but check these positive applications.

Num 21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Num 21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
Joh 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
Mat 10:16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

Even Satan himself has a positive application in the scripture below.

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.

Notice I said application. Satan himself is not positive. But the purpose he serves in God’s plan is “very good.”

Gen 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

You’ve given some great scriptures with negative applications of the “sun, moon, and stars”; here are some positive applications.

Rev 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
Jdg 5:20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
Deu 33:13 And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath,
Deu 33:14 And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon,
Psa 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
Psa 89:36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
Psa 89:37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Jer 31:35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Mar 16:2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

I hope you can see that the “sun, moon, and stars” can have both positive and negative applications.
