Scripture for The Sum of Thy Word is Truth?
Mike,
Thanks again for your web site! Have spent many hours reading articles and listening to audios. Have a question about a verse that you quote often, that being Psa. 119:160:
Psa 119:160 The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever. (ESV)
It is interesting to note that the word sum isn’t in the KJV of the Bible. Have been looking but so far haven’t been able to find a witness verse to that verse and was hoping that you could help me out with one. Sometimes using word searches isn’t effective because another verse can have the same meaning using different words. It is one of the drawbacks of having to use language to communicate.
May God Bless you and the entire iswasandwillbe team,K____
Hi K____,
I am so pleased you are being edified by iswasandwillbe. com.
Thank you for your question.
You ask for a second witness to Psa 119:160.
Psa 119:160 The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever. (ESV)
The answer to this, and every question concerning the Word of God will always be found only through the work of the spirit of our heavenly Father revealing the Truth, which is Christ, who is “the Word”, to us.
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
So God’s Word, Christ, the Truth, is not revealed to the natural man.
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, they are spiritually discerned.
So coming to understand the fact that Truth is to be known only in the sum of God’s Word is something which is “spiritually discerned, because scripture is deliberately written in a way that will hide its Truth, which is Christ, from the natural man, as Christ made clear to Peter.
Here is how that is accomplished by the holy spirit of God.
Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
Isa 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
You are right to want a second witness to any doctrine of scripture because “precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” Truth can only be found in the sum of God’s Word, and doctrinal Truth is never established upon one verse of scripture.
But for what purpose is this so?
Isa 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
Having said all of that I will give you a few verses of scripture which witness to the truth of Psa 119:160. Mat 4:4 and Luk 4:4 both tell us:
Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Luk 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
That statement must be understood in light of the fact that adultery is defined as “looking on a woman to lust after her in your heart”, and murder is defined as “hating your brother”. In other words all we need do is to be brought to see and acknowledge that all that is in Adam is in us and that so long as we fail to see that, and we all do, we are spiritually blind as a bat. It worked that way on the religious world in the time of Christ:
Joh 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
Joh 9:40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Joh 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
“The sum” of verse 39 is true and not just the first half. But verse 41 is also true, and these Pharisees are the spiritual type of the religious leaders of our day who cannot accept that all of God’s word is true of all of us (Mat 4:4 and Luk 4:4).
How is it possible to “live by every word” if it is not all true?
Here is another verse which proves that all of God’s Word, its “sum”, is Truth.
1Co 3:21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
1Co 3:22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;
“The world… life… death… things present, or things to come” are all to be found only within the Word of God, and it is “all ours” including ‘the world, life, death, things present or things to come”.
There is also this verse which make clear that “the sum of God’s Word is Truth”.
2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
“The man of God” is not “perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” except by “all scripture… the sum of Thy Word”. We also have this scripture to seal the explanation of whether there is a witness scripture to the sum of God’s Word being truth.
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Exactly what part of scripture would NOT be truth? Finally there is this verse of scripture:
2Pe 1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture at all is becoming its own explanation.
2Pe 1:21 For not by the will of man was prophecy carried on at any time, but, being carried on by holy spirit, holy men of God speak. (CLV)
No prophecy of scripture is of its own interpretation because holy men of old spake as they were moved to do so by the holy spirit, and the holy spirit is not schizophrenic. That is why “the sum of Thy Word is Truth.”
Your brother in His service,
Mike
