The Spiritual Significance of Music?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hi N____,

You ask, “What is the spiritual significance of music?”
All through scripture music is a form of worship. The Psalms are prophecy put to music. They edify, exhort and comfort us.

1Co 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

Music, like anything, can be misused and abused. Any music that glorifies God by edifying, exhorting and comforting us, to glorify our Lord, is good music. That which glorifies our flesh is not good music.
But the answer to your question is that music’s spiritual significance is always to either glorify and worship God, or glorify and worship the adversaries of our Lord.

Psa 66:1 <To the chief Musician, A Song [ or] Psalm.> Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:
Psa 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Psa 98:6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.
2Sa 6:5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals

The same is true in the New Testament.

Rev 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [ and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
Rev 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harp:
Rev 15:2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, [ and] over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

I hope this helps you to see that music symbolizes worship. If it is towards God, it will edify, exhort and comfort us. If it is towards our flesh and against the law of Christ, it will tear us down even if we fail to realize that it is doing so.

Your brother in Christ,
Mike
