Touch Me Not, For I Am Not Ascended to My Father<\/h4>\n

John 20:11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,<\/span>
\nJohn 20:12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.<\/span>
\nMark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:17 <\/span>Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.<\/b>
\nMatthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.<\/span>
\nMatthew 28:10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.<\/span>
\nJohn 20:18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.<\/span>
\nMark 16:11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our last study we reviewed the verses above. These verses revealed to us that the women, who represent the church, are the ones that reveal that Christ is risen from the dead to the disciples of Christ. This study will focus on John 20:17.<\/span><\/p>\n

John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father<\/u>: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.<\/b><\/p>\n

Here Christ mentions two important details. Firstly, he tells Mary to \u201cTouch me not\u201d and secondly, He states \u201cfor I am not yet ascended to my Father.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why did Christ say, \u201ctouch me not\u201d? Jesus stated, \u201c<\/span>for (because) I am not yet ascended to my Father<\/b>\u201d. Why did he have to ascend to the Father before he could be touched? He ascended to the Father in order to present himself as the firstfruits of the resurrection of them that slept. This action completes the process of being glorified. Until Christ is glorified, no one can receive the holy spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joh 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: <\/span>for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that <\/b>Jesus was not yet glorified<\/b>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

1Co 15:20 But now is <\/span>Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits<\/u> of them that slept.<\/b>
\n1Co 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.<\/span>
\n1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.<\/span>
\n1Co 15:23 But every man in his own order: <\/span>Christ the firstfruits<\/u><\/b>; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.<\/span>
\n1Co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.<\/span>
\n1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.<\/span>
\n1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here, Paul refers to Christ as the “firstfruits” of the resurrection, indicating that He is the first to rise from the dead and conquer death. The shadow of the firstfruits is found in the Old Testament, where the firstfruits of the harvest were presented to God as an offering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exo 23:18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.<\/span>
\nExo 23:19 <\/span>The first of the firstfruits<\/u> of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God<\/b>. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lev 23:9 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,<\/span>
\nLev 23:10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then <\/span>ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:<\/u><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Christ presented himself as the firstfruits of the dead (harvest) to His Father and His God, who is represented as the priest in the old testament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the transition of the \u201cold covenant\u201d to the \u201cnew covenant\u201d. The old is passing away, and the new is now in effect. Christ is now the High Priest and is now over the house of God, just as in the story of Joseph and the Pharaoh. The shadow is now a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen 41:38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, <\/span>Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?<\/b>
\nGen 41:39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:<\/span>
\nGen 41:40 <\/span>Thou shalt be over my house<\/u>, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.<\/b>
\nGen 41:41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.<\/span>
\nGen 41:42 And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;<\/span>
\nGen 41:43 And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.<\/span>
\nGen 41:44 <\/span>And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The true sacrifice is now completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heb 8:1 <\/span>Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;<\/b>
\nHeb 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.<\/span>
\nHeb 8:3 <\/span>For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.<\/b>
\nHeb 8:4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:<\/span>
\nHeb 8:5 <\/span>Who serve unto the example and shadow<\/u> of heavenly things,<\/b> as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, <\/span>See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern<\/u> shewed to thee in the mount<\/b>.
\nHeb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also <\/span>he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.<\/b>
\nHeb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.<\/span>
\nHeb 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, <\/span>Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:<\/b>
\nHeb 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.<\/span>
\nHeb 8:10 <\/span>For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:<\/b>
\nHeb 8:11 <\/span>And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.<\/b>
\nHeb 8:12 <\/span>For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.<\/b>

Christ became a better and living sacrifice leading the way for the Christs of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heb 9:11 But <\/span>Christ being come an high priest of good things to come<\/b>, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;<\/span>
\nHeb 9:12 <\/span>Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place<\/b>, having obtained eternal redemption for us.<\/span>
\nHeb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:<\/span>
\nHeb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?<\/span>
\nHeb 9:15 And <\/span>for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.<\/b>

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that <\/span>ye present your bodies a living sacrifice<\/u>, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.<\/b>
\nRom 12:2 And <\/span>be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind<\/u><\/b>, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Christ was the first sacrifice, and we are now the living sacrifice of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s look at the meaning of the word \u2018touch\u2019 which is G680. We will also look at its root G681.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Why did Christ say, \u201cTouch me not?\u201d All the above verses show us that touching Christ, or being touched by Christ, causes healing. Christ had not yet ascended to the Father to be fully glorified. Until Christ is glorified completely, the process of him receiving us cannot begin.<\/span><\/p>\n

            In conclusion, in John 20:17 after the resurrection, Jesus tells Mary Magdalene, “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father.” Throughout the Gospels, we see that touching Jesus or being touched by him results in physical healing, so why would He deny Mary this opportunity?<\/span><\/p>\n

            Jesus was emphasizing the importance of His ascension to the Father. Until He was fully glorified, the process of Him receiving us could not begin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.<\/span>
            \nJoh 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.<\/span>
            \nJoh 14:3 <\/span>And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself<\/u>; that where I am, there ye may be also<\/b>.
            \nJoh 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

            In 2 Corinthians 6:17, Paul urges us to “come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.” Similarly, in Colossians 2:21, Paul warns against being subject to human regulations that forbid touching or handling certain things. The idea is that in order to be received by God, we must avoid contamination from the world and its false doctrines.<\/span><\/p>\n

            2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?<\/span>
            \n2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?<\/span>
            \n2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? <\/span>for ye are the temple of the living God<\/b>; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.<\/span>

            When Jesus later appeared after His ascension, He allowed them to touch Him. This symbolizes that through His ascension, He had overcome the world and made a way for us to be reconciled with God. As 1 John 5:18 says, “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.” By remaining pure and holy, we can be sure that we will be received by God and ultimately share in the glory of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n
